Eligibility

Who qualifies for RCRS’s ASAM 3.1 residential treatment program and how to begin the admissions process.

Eligibility Criteria

RCRS’s ASAM 3.1 residential program is designed for adults who have been assessed as appropriate for clinically managed low-intensity residential treatment. General eligibility criteria include:

  • Men and women 18 years of age or older
  • A primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Clinical assessment confirming appropriateness for ASAM 3.1 level of care
  • Clinical assessment confirming appropriateness for ASAM 2.5 (PHP) or ASAM 2.1 (IOP), when indicated
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions that can be safely managed in a residential setting are accepted
  • Referral from a treatment provider, hospital, court, or other appropriate source (self-referrals also accepted)
  • Medicaid coverage (RCRS is a Medicaid-only provider and accepts all Virginia Medicaid MCO plans)

Final determination of eligibility is made through a comprehensive clinical intake assessment conducted by RCRS’s clinical team using the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria. Each prospective resident is assessed across all ASAM dimensions to confirm appropriateness for Level 3.1 care.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions

RCRS accepts residents who have co-occurring mental health conditions alongside their substance use disorder, provided these conditions can be safely and appropriately managed within a residential (non-hospital) setting. Our team works collaboratively with mental health providers and prescribers to ensure continuity of mental health care during residential treatment.

If you have questions about whether a specific mental health diagnosis is appropriate for our program, please contact our admissions team directly at (804) 533-2330.

Pre-Screening

Our team first conducts a pre-screening to identify immediate needs and confirm general fit before proceeding to full intake.

Clinical Intake Assessment

Our clinical team will conduct a comprehensive assessment using ASAM criteria to determine eligibility and appropriateness for ASAM 3.1 residential care, ASAM 2.5 (PHP), or ASAM 2.1 (IOP).

Placement & Admission

If appropriate and space is available, the individual is admitted to the program. Placement cannot be guaranteed in advance; timing depends on current availability.
