Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about RCRS, our ASAM 3.1 program, and the admissions process.

What is ASAM 3.1?

ASAM 3.1 refers to Level 3.1 — Clinically Managed Low-Intensity Residential — in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Patient Placement Criteria. It is a 24-hour residential treatment level designed for adults who need structured residential support and clinical services, but do not require intensive medical management. RCRS is Richmond’s first licensed ASAM 3.1 program. Learn more on our ASAM 3.1 page.

How do I refer someone to RCRS?

The fastest way to make a referral is to call our admissions line at (804) 533-2330. You may also email us at admissions@rivercityresidentialservices.com to request a referral form or intake information. See our full Referrals & Admissions page for details on what to include.

Can family members make a referral?

Yes. Family members are welcome to contact our admissions team to initiate a referral for a loved one. We can also speak with family members about the program and the admissions process. Call us at (804) 533-2330.

What is the typical length of stay?

Length of stay is individualized based on clinical need and progress. Most clients stay approximately 30–60 days, with final duration determined collaboratively by the resident and clinical team through ongoing assessment.

Does RCRS accept Medicaid?

Yes. RCRS is a Medicaid-only provider and accepts all Virginia Medicaid plans, including Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) plans. We do not accept other funding sources.

How long is the waitlist?

We cannot predict or quote waitlist timing. Placement depends on current availability. We encourage referral sources and individuals to contact us as early as possible to be added to our waitlist. Our admissions team will keep you informed as availability changes. Call (804) 533-2330 to get on our list.

What should someone bring when admitted?

Our admissions team will provide a detailed list of what to bring and what to leave at home when an admission date is confirmed. Generally, residents should bring personal identification, insurance cards, prescribed medications (in original labeled bottles), appropriate clothing, and personal hygiene items. Some items are restricted and cannot be brought into the facility, and due to limited space, belongings must be limited to essential items only.

Do you treat co-occurring mental health conditions?

Yes. RCRS accepts residents with co-occurring mental health conditions alongside their substance use disorder, provided these conditions can be safely managed in a residential (non-hospital) setting. Our team coordinates with mental health providers and prescribers to ensure continuity of care during the residential stay.

What happens after residential treatment?

Discharge planning begins at admission at RCRS. Our care coordination team helps each resident develop a comprehensive aftercare plan that may include connection to outpatient treatment, recovery housing, peer support, employment resources, and community connections. We work to ensure every resident leaves with a clear, supported path in their recovery journey.
